Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet has already received five Oscar nominations and no doubt they will keep coming because she is one of the best actresses of her generation. The secret of this British actress’ success is in the books, as this 33-year-old has portrayed the romantic interest of the Marquis de Sade, the friend of J.M. Barrie and a young Iris Murdoch. She also of course starred in the highest-grossing film of all time, Titanic. Her most recent role was as an illiterate former SS guard in The Reader, a movie based on an award-winning novel by German law professor Bernhard Schlink.

Q.What are you reading at the moment?
A.Don’t get the wrong idea because reading is my biggest passion, but these days the only things I read are children’s stories for my kids, and screenplays.

Q.What was the last thing you read?
A.Joe’s books are for really little kids. He’s only five. But with Mia we’ve just finished reading The Lord of the Rings and now The Hobbit.

Q.What’s your favorite title?
A.In that genre, (I’d say The Faraway Tree) series by Enid Blyton, which I loved as a girl and still love.

Q.What advice do you have for encouraging reading?
A.Better yet a wish because what I’d most love is for my children to develop my same passion for books. As an actress, I know that telling stories is one of the greatest pleasures there is.

Q.Do you like to be read to?
A.Who doesn’t? I’ve become a huge fan of audio-books. There’s a great feeling of calm that goes with the constant rhythm of reading.

Q.When do you read?
A.Reading has become my job. Imagine how great that is! But to relax, I prefer cooking.
