Portland girl, 13, competes in National Spanish Spelling Bee

A 13-year-old Portland girl will travel across the country and challenge her stage fright in exchange for an educational experience of a lifetime.

Mt. Tabor Middle School’s Miro Enriquez placed second out of 88 students in the Oregon Statewide Spanish Spelling Bee, which qualified her for nationals in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, July 16.

The sixth annual National Spanish Spelling Bee has 27 fourth- to eighth-grade students from eight states participating. Enriquez is one of three contestants representing Oregon.

Enriquez was born and raised in Portland and started learning Spanish through a Spanish immersion program in school when she was 5 years old. She is still enrolled in that program. Enriquez can read, write and speak fluently in Spanish.
