Study in Spain will be traveling throughout the US again this academic yearAnna Pleuhs

Saludos! My name is Anna Pleuhs and I am currently the Study in Spain Student Ambassador at Villanova University in Villanova, PA. Growing up in Europe, I traveled to Spain almost every summer when I was younger. I have developed a tremendous love for Spain, Spanish culture, food and their traditions. I spent the summer of 2010 working and living in Madrid, where my love for Spain grew even more. Therefore I was truly excited to be able to represent a country so close to my heart and share my love of Spain with other people around my campus. I love sharing my experiences with others and hope that it will help other students take advantage of all that Spain has to offer, if it is through studying abroad or just traveling there.

The present year, 2011, will once more have the Study in Spain program participating in the most important education fairs and events.

Since its opening, the Embassy of Spain-Trade Commission Miami, with the support of ICEX (Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade) and EDUESPAÑA have carried Study in Spain all across the US in an effort to promote international education in Spain.

The rewards have been undeniable, as Spain is the third preferred destination for American students worldwide.

This is a brief preview of the projected participation of Study in Spain. The dates and/or events may be subject to changes.

Francis Ford CoppolaRebecca Hall
Actress

Completely obsessed with Woody Allen when she was 14, Rebecca Hall not only recently starred in one of his films, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but received a Golden Globe best actress nomination for her performance. It’s not hard to understand where this 26-year-old, a graduate of the Roedean School in East Sussex who also attended Cambridge University for two years, gets her ability. The daughter of theater director Peter Hall and opera singer Maria Ewing, her artistic genes run in the family.

Do you speak Spanish? Did your time in Spain help?
I’m ashamed to say not a word. Well, maybe a word here and there but the filming didn’t help me because that was in Barcelona and they speak Catalan there. There was some confusion with the language.

Did Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem help out at all?
Penelope is the most beautiful woman in the world. No doubt. And it wasn’t hard at all for me to fall in love with Javier on screen. But the best thing about both of them is that they made me feel at home.

What did you learn during your time in Spain?
That you have to take care of yourself, and I don’t mean eating well or exercising but surrounding yourself with people you love and enjoying life. My make-up artist told me every Friday: “Good job. Now go and enjoy the weekend until six in the morning or on Monday you won’t be prepared to work.”

Did you follow her advice?
I’m obsessed with work, one of those who think about work even when they’re not working. That’s why I like to read, because it’s the only thing that gets my mind off work. Reading books and newspapers.

The University of Castilla-La Mancha Stephanie Davenport es Director of Study Abroad en Virginia Commonwealth University en Richmond, Virginia.

When was the last time you have been to Spain?
I visited Spain in December 2010 on an EDUESPANA tour of Madrid and Barcelona. I also had the chance to travel to Córdoba and Málaga afterwards. Christmastime is a wonderful time to visit Spain: the streets were covered in twinkling lights, the holiday food was especially delicious and I enjoyed watching everyone excitedly line up for the Christmas Lottery!

What do you enjoy most about Spain?
The art and museums are incredible in Spain! I could have spent weeks in the Reina Sofia, the Prado, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza. Gaudi’s works in Barcelona (the Casa Batllo, Sagrada Familia, etc.) are a delight for the senses! Everywhere I looked there was something beautiful to feast my eyes upon.

What do you think are the advantages of Spain as a destination for American students?
Spain is a safe destination for American students that offers excellent Spanish language immersion opportunities. Spain is often less expensive than other popular destinations within Europe, but is easily accessible to the rest of Europe and even North Africa, so our students who study in Spain often have the chance to travel extensively during their time abroad. Spanish people are generally very warm and welcoming, which helps our students in overcoming their shyness with practicing the language.

Could you describe the Study Abroad programs your university has with Spain?
We send VCU students to Spain on a variety of programs. In addition to offering semester and year-long options in a variety of locations throughout Spain (through the ISEP network), we have a very successful faculty-led program with our Partner institution, the University of Córdoba, during the summer. The program is designed as a full immersion program. Students live with host families and participate in excursions each Friday to places in and around Córdoba including la Mezquita, the Museo Arquologico de Córdoba, and El Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos. Students study grammar skills, Spanish culture and society, Spanish history, Spanish literature and art. Cultural activities are also included in the program such as a flamenco evening at a local tavern.

How satisfied are, in general, American students going to Spain?
We send a large number of our students to Spain each year, and they inevitably return with glowing reviews. Our students fall in love with Spain! In fact, many of the students return to Spain after they graduate to teach English, travel, or to further their studies in postgraduate programs.
