Study in Spain will be traveling throughout the US again this academic yearStudy in Spain will be traveling throughout the US again this academic year

The 2009-10 academic year will once more have the Study in Spain program participating in the most important education fairs and events.

Since its opening, the Embassy of Spain-Trade Commission Miami, with the support of ICEX (Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade) and EDUESPAÑA have carried Study in Spain all across the US in an effort to promote international education in Spain.

The rewards have been undeniable, as Spain is the third preferred destination for American students worldwide.

This is a brief preview of the projected participation of Study in Spain. The dates and/or events may be subject to changes.

Francis Ford CoppolaScarlett Johansson
Actress

She is known as Woody Allen’s muse, having already starred in three of his films. But Scarlett Johansson’s decision to appear in his latest project, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, was due to her interest in learning Spanish.

Why Spanish?
I already knew a little from high school but it was the most pathetic Spanish. So I wanted to come out of this (experience) being able to talk.

Did you improve?
Penélope (Cruz) was always encouraging me and talked to me in Spanish so I would learn. I was left speechless without understanding a single word, but what she said sounded amazing.

Was it any better for Woody Allen?
He’s worse off than I am because he’s incapable of understanding anyone with an accent. Not even a Brit.

What did you see and do in Barcelona?
It was a dream come true, and working with Penélope and Javier (Bardem) even more so. But I have to say that Javier was a bad tour guide.

Do you like reading?
I’m more of an adventurer, someone who is always looking for the unexpected.

And what about writing?
I’d love to write and I try to but there are people with a lot more talent.

What are you reading at the moment?
Screenplays. And I like to listen to music. Reading Tom Waits’ songs is like re-imagining Alice in Wonderland.

The University of Castilla-La Mancha Colegio Delibes

You will find Colegio Delibes in one of the main streets, five minutes walking from the Plaza Mayor which is the city centre and a typical meeting point in Salamanca.

We are in a recently restored historical building, fully equipped with the latest technology. You enter the school through a spacious entrance to find twenty air conditioned classrooms, one video and conference room, our free internet hall, the coffee area where you can have a chat with your friends during the break times (or you can sit out in our typical enclosed patio with a castilian well), and of course the library.

Our college’s best characteristic is a very international ambience where you will meet people from all over the world and all sort of ages. You will be able to enjoy together not only your lessons but also a wide range of after-class activities included in our complete programme, we start the week with a bowling competition and finish it with some dancing lessons or a dinner out and a party, we have some sports in the middle and our very typical “tapas” outing.

Once you have decided that you want to learn or practice your Spanish, you will be able to choose from ten different types of courses. You can learn just the language or do something extra like Culture, Literature, Business or Translation, if you need to be fluent quickly, we have another special course “to get you speaking” sooner than expected. Maybe you want very specific Spanish for your job or a tailor made course just for you or the D.E.L.E exam ( the official diploma of the Spanish Government showing your level of the language). You can study nearly anything you want.
You can choose your accommodation for your stay with us from five different options. We have excellent host families where you will “have to” speak Spanish, you can share a fully equipped apartment with some of our students or live in our own students residence and get everything done for you. If you prefer a hotel or even a private studio just for you, it’s also possible. Our philosophy is: “The best service at a reasonable price”

The school has been granted with the most important certificate in Spain:
Recognition from Instituto Cervantes.

The University of Castilla-La Mancha Wendy Williamson

Wendy Williamson is the Director of Study Abroad at the Eastern Illinois University and has helped thousands of students travel overseas. She holds a M.A. in Counselor Education: Administration of College Student Affairs and a B.A. in Communication and Culture. Wendy completed two assignments (four years) with the US Peace Corps in West Africa and South America. In her free time, Wendy loves to write and travel.
In this interview lounge, she tells us her experience with Spain and Spanish programs:

When was the last time you have been to Spain?
Summer of 2010.

What do you enjoy most about Spain?
Spain has a rich and vibrant culture which I enjoy very much. I particularly like the warmth of people and the value placed on family and friends. I was there when Spain won the world cup and it was fantastic to see the celebration in the streets.

What do you think are the advantages of Spain as a destination for American students?
A rich cultural experience, the opportunity to learn Spanish, the lower cost compared to other European destinations, the diversity across regions, the opportunity to see the history of Jews, Muslims and Christians coexisting peacefully.

Could you describe the Study Abroad programs your university has with Spain?
We offer a program in Salamanca as well as Malaca.

How satisfied are, in general, American students going to Spain?
Students love Spain!
