Eva Mendes

Eva Mendes is a young, attractive Hispanic woman and the new face of Calvin Klein and Revlon. Considered one of the sexiest actresses in Hollywood, her risqué poses have earned her mother’s disapproval on more than one occasion. But she’s also an avid reader with a preference for screenplays based on literature.

Q. Describe your perfect day.
A. Staying in bed next to my dog and reading The New York Times.

Q. Is that all you read?
A. On Sunday mornings, yes. But, as far as books, The Fountainhead is always on my nightstand together with Atlas Shrugged. It’s good to reread them at different times of your life.

Q. And what about in Spanish?
A. I’ve reread La reina del sur (The Queen of the South) by Arturo Pérez Reverte. I’d read it before and both the book and the screenplay by Jonathan Jakubowitz are excellent, although I don’t know if the movie will go forward. I hope it does because I want to tell this story and film in Spain.

Q. Who is your favorite author?
A. My favorite, the one I always have in my purse, is Neruda. El libro de las preguntas (The Book of Questions). So when I’m really frustrated I open its pages and it brightens my day. But I prefer to read in English. I feel more comfortable.

Q. How would you rate your Spanish?
A. (Good enough) for hanging around the house. I always speak in Spanish with my family, but in the Miami style of screaming and with a lot of words in English: “Pasa el lechón, mami. Overhere” (Pass the pork, mom. Over here) and stuff like that.
