Heads of Spanish language academies meet in Mexico

The 15th Congress of the Association of Spanish Language Academies was inaugurated Monday with words about the good health of the language and the need to continue exploring its diversity in order to keep strengthening it.'Taking part in the ceremony were the directors of the Royal Spanish Academy, Dario Villanueva, of the Mexican Academy, Javier Labastida, and the head of the Ibero-American General Secretariat, Rebeca Grynspan, among other dignitaries.

Univision, The Atlantic To Launch Spanish-Language CityLab Latino.

Hoping to tap into the growing Latino media market, Univision Digital and The Atlantic announced Tuesday they would partner to launch CityLab Latino, a Spanish-language digital publication that draws its inspiration from The Atlantic's CityLab.com."Originally launched in 2011 as The Atlantic Cities, CityLab covers issues that affect cities and those who live in them. CityLab Latino will similarly cover "pressing issues, ideas, and innovations emerging from the world’s urban centers," according to a release from Univision and The Atlantic.

Spanish-language TV station says ‘hola’ to Hazleton, PA market.

Hazleton, the city’s first Spanish-language television station is on the air, with its reach extending far beyond the city."Telekaribe, offered locally on Service Electric Cablevision channel 299 as part of the company’s Hispanic Tier of channels, proclaims itself in its promotional materials to be Dominican-oriented, and delivers “local and international television on one channel.”

San Antonio praised for bilingual education.

Harlandale's dual immersion program is one of a number of San Antonio bilingual education programs to be praised by Washington think-tank New America. Their latest report, Boomtown Kids, looks specifically at San Antonio as a model for the rest of the country to aspire to.Like most first-grade classrooms in the Harlandale Independent School District, learning is split between 90 percent Spanish and 10 percent English. Next year, the kids will split their time 80/20. By fourth grade, they'll learn 50/50.
